Twenty-four-year old Englishman Ben Watson joins the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP this year to form a twin-spearhead in the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship after an impressive rookie season.
There was a certain inevitability that the native of Nottinghamshire, whose father also raced GPs in the 1990s, should follow his elder brother into motocross and after an impressive youth career at national level he first appeared on the international stage when he contested the European series as a ten-year-old, winning his very first race in the 65cc class. He progressed through the classes and has impressed throughout his adult career, starting with a fifth place in EMX250 and victory at the world-famous Enduro du Touquet in the Junior class. Ranked top-five in the MX2 World Championship in both 2018 and 2020 and holding a similar ranking until he was sidelined mid-season by injury in 2019, he proved his ability on all surfaces in the closing stages of his final career with GP victories on the vastly-different tracks of Lommel in Belgium and Pietramurata in Italy before switching to the premier MXGP class in 2021. No less than fifteen top-ten moto finishes and ten top-ten GP scorelines, headed by a fifth place in The Netherlands and sixth in Belgium, saw him ranked eleventh at the end of his rookie season and he confirmed his potential by winning the FIM gold medal as best individual in the MXGP class at the Motocross of Nations. Kawasaki had no hesitation in signing the highly-promising and physically-strong Brit to complete a twin-spearhead assault on the 2022 MXGP world title chase.
